Mental Health Checkup and Wrestling

E103 – With the stress of being a busy mom of three, and the isolation of living solo especially during shutdown, we talk quite a bit about our anxiety and depression. This is a re-airing of a livestream event hosted by the Victims & Villains podcast. We were honored to be given an hour during the 24hr awareness-athon during which we talked about mental health, parenting, genetics, lifestyle, and what has worked for us to get through tough times. We go over antidepressant medication and anxiety-reducing tactics, talk about suicide trends, fatigue, and finding purpose. In this episode, we also laugh a lot (Weens falls off her chair right off the bat!), we talk a bit about Glow, Marc Maron, Love Fraud, and trivia questions (email your answers to win swag!).The stories continue with nose and boobie punching, women’s football team tryouts, Survivor auditions, stunt driving school, and starring in the Sega Fighting Vipers video game. Why does the pierced nose logo look so familiar?! And the fun highlight – we watch our avatar selves wrestle other podcasting women in the Cretin’s Guild Championship Tournament via their WWE 2K19 video game! How far does Mouse make it in the rounds? How about Weens? Do we get crowned Champion? How ’bout those outfits? For visuals, watch on our YouTube channel or the original on Cretin’s Guild YouTube. Thank you to Victims & Villains for hosting, to our listeners, to our amazing patrons that keep us afloat, and to our wonderful community of podpals. We love you.

Ratty New Year!

E99 – We’ve been Mousing and Weening since December 2017 so this marks our three year anniversary of the podcast! Thank you to everyone for supporting us and listening! We celebrate by talking all about the party that some Christmas rats threw in Julianne’s kitchen and futon and closet and lingerie drawer. We even get a pop-in interview (the sweetest ever!) with the pest control man who happens to interrupt our recording! All this hot rat talk naturally gets us onto the subject of men so we create some steamy Damon, DiCaprio, Martin and Banderas sandwiches. After some past Argentine boyfriend reminiscing, we jump back to reality and recap Christmas in Idaho. It was a great visit full of skeet shooting, holiday traditions, and Cowboy Denny bear poking. We segue into Juls’ story of an ex throwing her into a bear, and an injurious snowboarding photo adventure. And now that we’re back in California, we’re in quarantine and questioning bubbles. We are hearing about more and more people close to us catching covid, which is not a fun subject. Be careful everyone! Back to fun romantic memories of New Years and our goals for 2021. Ah, it’s fun to relive these Tahoe, New York, Times Square crowd stories. Remember crowds?! We close this with a shoutout song to all of the podcasts we’ve mentioned in past episodes.

Fix My Life Sis!

E91 – What Would Weens Do? Parenting advice and more! Julianne has been staying with Joelle during quarantine and after a few weeks, has a new perspective on how her family operates. Knowing this, Mouse asks for advice to overhaul how the house runs and how she’s raising the kids. Julianne becomes a pseudo life coach and gives Joelle tips in 5 categories: food, kids and parenting, self, household, and relationships. As uncomfortable as it is for the little sister to tell the big sister what to do, the takeaways are very positive. This episode has so many great nuggets of wisdom that anyone listening will learn a thing or two they can implement to improve their life!

Grandma’s Nuts

E90 – Mom’s in town so we sit down for some relationship questions, incriminating grandparent stories, hip and trendy celebrity impersonations, and hearty guffaws. Find out what nuts, tortoises, the Tucson desert, and bowls of blood have in common. Weens asks about regrets with our dad which spurs a story about dating Cowboy Denny. We question our tomboy qualities, learning about what mom fought for and what she let go of. And we finally reveal to her our secret ways of sneaking out of the house in high school, but are surprised by her response. There’s a fact check on coyote fatalities, we accidentally pitch a real-life horror movie idea about rattlesnakes in the ravine, and we close it out with a three-part harmony to our lord. You heard it here first!

Love Life and Dating Q&A

E88 – Still stuck on the topic of online dating, Joelle talks Julianne into doing a funny Q & A to find out all about our love lives. First we catch up on 80’s tv, get advice from Alan Alda, and lament the air quality from the Northern California wildfires (stay safe Sunni, Brandi and Cori). Then we jump into online dating with optimistic Mouse and pessimistic Weens, and dissect what types of guys Weens likes. There’s a rather frightening interruption that throws us for a loop, so we pause and come back the next day. You’ll hear about married men, divorced men, and deal breakers when it comes to humor, taste in music, politics, and footwear. We even play a little fantasy threesome, FMK or Whoopee-Marry- Kill, and learn way too much about Tom Hardy and Don Johnson!

Plucking, Online Dating, Dirty John and Feet

E87 – This is a fun one from under a blanket in LA! As we’re staring at kneecaps, we talk about shaving, tweezing and how it brings pleasure. Why? To find out, we fact-check plucking and trichotillomania and find out some interesting biology behind it. Then we recap a recent camping trip and have some amazing, simple advice for parents. Naturally, this leads us to talk about the Reels conspiracy theory and online dating. Weens is poking her hairless toe into the man pool and we talk all about Hinge and the fine folks popping up on the app. Then Julianne tells the story of her friend’s involvement with Dirty John. Holy crumb, no wonder she’s hesitant! Finally we get into feet, loafers, and Joelle’s ex-boyfriends who belong in them. It’s a funny episode that lets you peek inside the world of a couple of grown-up but not-so-grown-up sisters.

Part 2 Alison Arngrim: Nellie Oleson of Little House on the Prairie

E86 – We’re back to finish our fun interview with Alison Arngrim, the wonderful Nellie Oleson actress, turned stand-up comedian and New York Times best-selling author. She talks about real-life ‘Little House on the Prairie’ mean girl moments, on-set rumors, what Michael Landon was like, her ringlet HAIR!, and why she thinks Little House child actors grew up to stay on the straight and narrow. We talk about how Alison is the David Hasselhoff of France and the hilarious reason why French cultural differences work in her favor. Joelle recounts stories when she pretended to be tomboy Laura, learned how to be blind like Mary, and even re-enacted the famous Nellie wheelchair scene, sans duck poop and radioactive waste of course! Alison answers some listener questions about her tv episodes and we learn the truth behind certain famous scenes. We also discuss the fact that The Rock might have a crush on her of sorts!

Alison is the queen of reinvention and hustle, and tells us about her Nasty Nellie tours of Hollywood and her online stand-up shows. She is also a survivor of childhood abuse and now is a powerful advocate at the National Association to Protect Children www.Protect.org Hear her full story in her book, available on www.Bonnetheads.com. We talk about the anxiety during this stressful pandemic, but also the hopeful medical advances that are being made (llama vaccines?!), and how she copes by being a helper. She has found that daily readings of the ‘Little House’ books on her Facebook Live have helped her and her thousands of followers find comfort. Alison is such a positive force out there and we had a wonderful time learning her story, her causes, and getting to know her. Please follow her and do the same!

Things Are Getting Hairy

E77 – Well, Joelle’s well broke and we hear about the stress as she watches her property’s plants slowly die, a special kind of torture for a gardener! And Julianne catches us up on her frustrating hair moment and hasty Corona cut.  We segue into talking about HAIR during quarantine and the special problems we are all facing – roots, greys, colors and cuts! We interview our good friend Carla Reynolds, a local hairdresser with some thoughts, tips, and tricks during this do-it-yourself time. Should we use boxed color? Try new colors while at home? How can we deal with these roots growing out? How are hairdressers feeling about going back to work? Trimming  kids’ hair? After some more awful 90’s references (apparently we’re stuck), we pivot again into what is fondly called Culture Corner. We have two fun clips with Julianne’s friends: Matthew Stevens reads us a very hip poem of his, and Chris Osmundson gives us a book recommendation complete with character voices! Hear the grand finale song as Julianne sings us out with “The Magic Store” that you may remember from The Muppet Movie.

Thank you all for listening and we hope you will consider supporting Meals on Wheels, providing food and well-checks for seniors in need.

Patti Negri: Hollywood Psychic-Medium and Good Witch

E74 – We celebrate Mouse and mom’s birthday by going to the Hollywood hills to visit a good witch, Patti Negri, author and psychic medium to the stars…and to us! Patti shares her personal journey of how she learned to embrace her gifts of communicating with the dead from a very early age. She reveals some spiritual encounters on tv shows clearing ghosts from famous houses, channeling celebrities like Michael Jackson, and conjuring serial killers like that of the Black Dahlia. Then we get down and dirty with our own personal tarot readings and contacting our dead loved ones. Mouse gets a special bathtub spell to connect to her inner child, Weens discovers that her new love is waiting in a corner, and mom talks to her mother who reveals something very personal and vulnerable. Patti facilitates some very spooky-cool and extremely insightful connections to ourselves and to our loved ones who have passed on. And at the end of the episode Mouse gets unsettling news regarding our dead father and the lies that were told. Where will we go from here?  Patti gives some great tips on how to tap into your own psychic abilities, how to deal with imbalance and stress, and how to work toward happiness, all outlined in her book Old World Magick for the Modern World. Come on this journey with us as Patti lifts the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and allows us all to peek in. You will be on the edge of your seat!
