She Writes the Songs, Grape MTV, Mad About Pets

E115 – Feisty! What starts as a fun conversation about work and stay-at-home-mom life, turns a corner in this episode! First we play a guessing game while listening to one of Julianne’s rad original songs “Cave Girl” This inspires personality test chatter and we wonder: are you a storyteller or an archiver? Mouse gets called out on a personal chef on vacation and explains why she feels like an imposter during talk of thrift stores. We go deep on grape Flintstones, Red Vines, 80’s hair, and Guess the Year of these MTV videos. But when the topic of mean girl sisterhood comes up, things get bristly. Parents Just Don’t Understand! What’s up with pet fish, iguanas, sugar gliders, anoles, and buffed hamsters?! Julianne is an animal lover with a pet store background and makes her case about caged pets vs domesticated rescued animals. Joelle argues for animals in education and for personal connection. Who wins this debate? Then the real question… what’s a weenus?! And we wonder if Juls has macropsia, which we mistakenly call macronesia in the episode, feeling dizzy from disproportionate objects. We end on Mouse’s sweet middle son. Is the sassy teen overcompensating for the fact that he’s actually a tender-hearted guy?

Summer Camp, Psychic Dreams, Ethnomusicology, and Jaja Ding Dongs

E114 – While catching up, we talk psychic abilities and manifesting your thoughts into reality. Do you believe in karma? Then we jump into what’s on mama Mouse’s mind: summer camps and plans for her 3 kids now that California is opening up. After reminiscing about our camp memories, including wheelchairs and Wildman, we talk about the safety of summer camps, especially sleepaway camps, when it comes to COVID and predators. Of course this gets us talking about kidnappings and murders here in San Diego and we mention a bit about Chelsea King, John Gardner, Danielle Van Dam, and David Westerfield. Joelle tells her personal story of the Miramar Lake Jogger, which is super disturbing. Then Weens exerts her telekinetic powers onto her microphone, which gets us back onto pyschic abilities. She even teaches us how to control dreams! Hear the crazy experiment that Weens conducted on this, proving her powers. Speaking of control, or lack thereof, we have received some unsolicited dick pics. But the only kinds of ding dongs we’re interested in are of the jaja variety – hear Julianne’s story on this! We jump into her ethnomusicology class and learn about microtones, syncopation, and what her jazz musician friends have to say about Western music. We also want to ask you – our listener – about what puts you in the zone? Julianne teases future interviews on this subject with saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Matt Politano, and drummer Steve Ferrone, who, along with bassist Matt Cory, are known as The Coffee Shop Trio. They have gigs every Sunday that we will advertise on our social media, so please be sure to follow us @mouseandweens on all the platforms!

Easter Dog, Feckit, Paul Williams, and Microaggressions

E110 – Easter afternoon we took the podcast for a walk on the dog trail. Are you into Jesus?! We talk traditions in our house, and the hunt for the golden egg brings up the trophy-for-all discussion. Hear Juls’ hot take on overconfident kids and practical parenting. We’re interrupted by dog fight drama, but Weens quickly channels her Cesar Milan-style advice. We discuss the changing dynamic of our sisterhood and how the little sis is now teaching the big sis. This ties into Joelle’s new favorite idea: The Feck It Fifties complete with a Feckit List, because life is short, who cares what people think, and family is important! In an Ishtar segue, we talk about songwriter, actor, Grammy winner Paul Williams and what happened when Mom and Julianne stayed at his house! We get into Weens’ sociology and psychology studies and learn about microaggressions, schemas, and body language to quickly size a person up. Hot example is Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s paparazzi scuffle back in the day, so of course Joelle paid attention! This also reminds us of the 4-part Showtime series “Love Fraud” about a real hunt for a dirt bag narcissist. Talk about microaggressions! Enjoy an awkward double hello with neighbors in a very “Curb Your Enthusiasm” tinkle moment, and be sure to follow and subscribe everywhere you can find our podcast! Steve Ferrone, Drummer of Tom Petty, Duran Duran, Clapton & More

E101 – We had the honor of interviewing esteemed jazz, rock, and R&B drummer Steve Ferrone. You have definitely heard his work – just look at this bio below. In this recording, he gets candid about love, family, dalliances, the rock and roll lifestyle, and explains some life changes he has made for the better. We learn about the mods and rockers of Brighton Beach in the 60’s and how Steve’s first blues band opened for The Who. Steve and Julianne talk shop regarding syncopation and style – Pretty Purdie, Steve Gadd, and Led Zeppelin to name a few. When asked about nerves, traveling, and groupies, we heard some funny, surprising stories! Duran Duran played a big role during Stephen’s busiest year, when he also played with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and was in the Saturday Night Live band. We figured out the connection between Questlove and Average White Band. And Julianne’s Unchained questions inspire a great Johnny Cash impression! Find out which soap opera Steve was in, which musicians and moments rendered him star-struck, including recalling what it was like to record at Abbey Road. We also hear the amazing story of Prince performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote in some questions, so we find out about a reunion, conflict, grief, what life was really like in the band, and insight into the person that Tom Petty was.

Steve has played with Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Morrissey-Mullen, Bee Gees, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, Tracey Chapman, Mick Jagger, George Benson, Peter Frampton, Anita Baker, Bryan Ferry, Rick James, Slash, Scritti Politti, Pooh and more.

Muppets, Gilman, Green Day, East Bay Punk, Tattoos

E95 – After a little quarantine talk, we do some happiness exercises and get right into some fun filmmaking memories. Julianne worked on “The Muppet Movie” and recalls a day shooting with Chris Cooper, stunt explosions and injuries, and what Brian Henson had to say about his dad Jim Henson. Another sweet man we discuss is Chris Martin from Coldplay. Is Joelle horny or just nostalgic for live music and happier times? We’ll go with the latter as we segue into nostalgia talk about 924 Gilman St., the co-op music club from our Bay Area youth. Julianne reconnected with friends from these days, and we both watched the documentary “Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk” to see her friend Sean’s role. She talks about his connection to Green Day, and adds a hilarious story about Lint (aka Tim Armstrong) and Lars, the guys from Operation Ivy and Rancid. Why was Julianne fascinated by these types of people? She connected with guys who were interesting and wild, a lot like her friend Puck from “The Real World San Francisco”. We hear a funny story about him and our dad in the San Ramon Christmas tree farm, and then remember a story about the East Area Rapist (Golden State Killer) in that same farm, and a Richard Ramirez (Night Stalker) serial killer rental-house connection. We get back into talking about the psychology and angst behind punk music, and the judgements that go along with the music, the hair, and even the tattoos. It quickly turns into a parenting discussion about tattooing, morals, and shame. We battle out who was the worst teen and when a parent needs to draw the line vs when to compromise with your kids when they go down this path. Where do YOU fall on the punk to square scale?!

He is also an amazing storyteller, screenwriter, producer, musician, and wonderful human being. Grandma’s Nuts

E90 – Mom’s in town so we sit down for some relationship questions, incriminating grandparent stories, hip and trendy celebrity impersonations, and hearty guffaws. Find out what nuts, tortoises, the Tucson desert, and bowls of blood have in common. Weens asks about regrets with our dad which spurs a story about dating Cowboy Denny. We question our tomboy qualities, learning about what mom fought for and what she let go of. And we finally reveal to her our secret ways of sneaking out of the house in high school, but are surprised by her response. There’s a fact check on coyote fatalities, we accidentally pitch a real-life horror movie idea about rattlesnakes in the ravine, and we close it out with a three-part harmony to our lord. You heard it here first!
