E40 – Should I Stay or Should I Zo

Kids and Piano: we discuss how to deal with kids who want to quit activities. In Joelle’s case, two of her three kids want to stop taking piano lessons. We interview their music teacher, guitarist and pianist Zo Shah, for his insight and advice for parents. Hear about our musical background and advice from friends, and how to properly pronounce ukulele! We also chat about the Netflix show Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, donating dresses to Cinderella’s Attic, the Myers-Briggs personality test, strange sensory seeking behaviors, and whether Weens should throw her own self wedding!

E25 Trader Joes Tragedy, Body Image, Caveman Theories, Lean In

More deep thoughts. In this episode we discuss the Silver Lake hostage situation at the Trader Joes down the street from Weens’ house in Los Angeles. She describes the scene of helicopters, emergency vehicles, camera crews, journalists, cops, SWAT, and the mayor, and laments our detachment watching real life situations unfold on screen. Mouse wonders if it felt like Weens was at work, on the set of a cop show. But the reality and the thought of these victims having PTSD from this tragedy gets us talking about trauma and how it can change brain circuitry, resulting in all sorts of physical manifestations including rage and issues with food. We discuss therapy, body image issues, and bikinis on the beach. Why do women worry about bodies so much and men tend not to? Mouse gets into her caveman theories and how they relate to diet (are we evolving to be vegetarians?), dating, and mean girls. Is it evolution that has brought about gender and sexuality differences? Will we see women in power as we witness more marches and the fight for salary equality? Is this the cycling of history as at the turn of the century and again in the 60’s? Mouse talks about Sheryl Sandberg’s book “Lean In” and how she’s trying to apply it to raise a strong daughter. We talk about siblings and their role in families – first born, middle child, and the baby. What were Mouse and Weens like as little kids and why? And then we close it out by realizing that Weens, a boiling frog, needs a well-aerated plug!
