Cabo Mexico Vacation

E111 – Come escape to Baja California Mexico with us! Traveling with the family, Joelle recounts her recent Spring Break week in Cabo. She has some tips for parents who want to travel with kids, especially teens, and talks about timeshares Vidanta and Cabo Azul. Mouse recounts the things to do while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, especially the fishing and Flora Farms adventures! There are deep questions that Mouse has for listeners too, such as when going on a resort vacation do you take the hotel shampoo or leave it there? What is your sex life like during a family trip? How angry do you get at flight changes? And do you think our kids sound like spoiled brats?! We also talk about traveling during coronavirus times, needing to take a Covid test to get on a flight, and generally getting back to real life now that everyone is getting vaccinated. How much is worrying about the virus, and how much is anxiety transitioning back to being busy, especially in crowded LA? Can Weens just stay forever in her virtual college homeschool cave?! Listen for a Sixteen Candles trivia question, and weigh in on whether you’d be interested in a Beastie Boys whale watching cruise!

Easter Dog, Feckit, Paul Williams, and Microaggressions

E110 – Easter afternoon we took the podcast for a walk on the dog trail. Are you into Jesus?! We talk traditions in our house, and the hunt for the golden egg brings up the trophy-for-all discussion. Hear Juls’ hot take on overconfident kids and practical parenting. We’re interrupted by dog fight drama, but Weens quickly channels her Cesar Milan-style advice. We discuss the changing dynamic of our sisterhood and how the little sis is now teaching the big sis. This ties into Joelle’s new favorite idea: The Feck It Fifties complete with a Feckit List, because life is short, who cares what people think, and family is important! In an Ishtar segue, we talk about songwriter, actor, Grammy winner Paul Williams and what happened when Mom and Julianne stayed at his house! We get into Weens’ sociology and psychology studies and learn about microaggressions, schemas, and body language to quickly size a person up. Hot example is Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s paparazzi scuffle back in the day, so of course Joelle paid attention! This also reminds us of the 4-part Showtime series “Love Fraud” about a real hunt for a dirt bag narcissist. Talk about microaggressions! Enjoy an awkward double hello with neighbors in a very “Curb Your Enthusiasm” tinkle moment, and be sure to follow and subscribe everywhere you can find our podcast! Mental Health Checkup and Wrestling

E103 – With the stress of being a busy mom of three, and the isolation of living solo especially during shutdown, we talk quite a bit about our anxiety and depression. This is a re-airing of a livestream event hosted by the Victims & Villains podcast. We were honored to be given an hour during the 24hr awareness-athon during which we talked about mental health, parenting, genetics, lifestyle, and what has worked for us to get through tough times. We go over antidepressant medication and anxiety-reducing tactics, talk about suicide trends, fatigue, and finding purpose. In this episode, we also laugh a lot (Weens falls off her chair right off the bat!), we talk a bit about Glow, Marc Maron, Love Fraud, and trivia questions (email your answers to win swag!).The stories continue with nose and boobie punching, women’s football team tryouts, Survivor auditions, stunt driving school, and starring in the Sega Fighting Vipers video game. Why does the pierced nose logo look so familiar?! And the fun highlight – we watch our avatar selves wrestle other podcasting women in the Cretin’s Guild Championship Tournament via their WWE 2K19 video game! How far does Mouse make it in the rounds? How about Weens? Do we get crowned Champion? How ’bout those outfits? For visuals, watch on our YouTube channel or the original on Cretin’s Guild YouTube. Thank you to Victims & Villains for hosting, to our listeners, to our amazing patrons that keep us afloat, and to our wonderful community of podpals. We love you.

Christmas Questions for Your Forever Person

E98 – Find out why Weens almost paid Mouse $2.99 per minute! So humiliating, hilarious, and ho ho inspiring. But first we catch up – faking it until we make it – about college classes, race, selfish kids, Julianne’s songwriting, and copyrighting music. Hear the step by step of Joelle’s Covid testing and the why behind it. And then we get into our list: Questions to ask your forever person this Christmas. Hear the hard-hitting discussions on cards, cats, snowflake sweaters, work parties, dancing, holiday songs, church, wassail, caroling, mistletoe, and turtlenecks. We hope this episode jiggles your belly like a bowl full of jelly, and we want to hear your answers too. So be sure to write us at mouseandweens@gmail.com

Joyce Is Choice

E97 – Our mom was out to California to visit and we roped her into an early morning recording! Mouse, dressed like Larry King, goes in for some digs. And Weens, dressed like Liberace, gets back with some jabs as we revert to our sibling rivalry days of fighting for mom’s attention. Laugh along at the stories of pets, cowboys, nicknames, cookies, feminism, and altercations at the dentist office. We reminisce about our psychic visit, our dad and friend who passed away, sing a little impromptu gospel, and hear a heartwarming story about our mom’s big brother, our Uncle Bill, to whom this episode is dedicated. This is a lighthearted peek into a day in our life so come join the family! Hope you enjoy it, as we all jump into the holiday season!

Balancing Act

E96 – Life is a big balancing act right now. Who can relate? After some requisite excretory system discussion, and talk about backyards, shotguns, and The Sopranos, we jump into how our Thanksgiving went. As a parent, it’s difficult to know when you’re giving the right amount of time to your kids versus your work. And in Mouse’s case, does podcasting count as work or is it a hobby? What are other people thinking about how much time she spends with her kids versus her computer? Perceptions, expectations, assumptions and The Shoulds can get us all into trouble, so we try to break down our personal experiences. We also get into how friends and family are at different stages of how they are dealing with coronavirus expectations right now. Some of us are expanding our bubbles and spending time with family, and others are strictly locked down and only going on guilt trips! How is this going to play into the upcoming holidays? Join the discussion and let us know how you feel at mouseandweens@gmail.com

When is Horror Okay for Kids?

E94 – Parenting does not come with a handbook. So when is it okay to let your kids watch horror movies? Joelle has two teenage sneaky boys interested in gruesome and gory, and one little girl fascinated by the occult. But being a mom who hates scary things herself, she questions whether she has been too overprotective with her restrictions. Cool aunt and introspective sister Julianne weighs in with her perspective, as she recollects being a kid seeking out thrillers. How were we raised and how did we turn out? Why do people like to be scared? Is it just a rush or does it mess with the brain? We consult some authors on the subject and even bring on an expert in the field to provide his two cents, horror filmmaker Don Adams. He schools us in Horror 101 and gives us a list of classic scary movies to start with. Let’s dissect this issue and see where we land. Will this be the year that horror makes its way into Mouse’s house?

Fix My Life Sis!

E91 – What Would Weens Do? Parenting advice and more! Julianne has been staying with Joelle during quarantine and after a few weeks, has a new perspective on how her family operates. Knowing this, Mouse asks for advice to overhaul how the house runs and how she’s raising the kids. Julianne becomes a pseudo life coach and gives Joelle tips in 5 categories: food, kids and parenting, self, household, and relationships. As uncomfortable as it is for the little sister to tell the big sister what to do, the takeaways are very positive. This episode has so many great nuggets of wisdom that anyone listening will learn a thing or two they can implement to improve their life!

Grandma’s Nuts

E90 – Mom’s in town so we sit down for some relationship questions, incriminating grandparent stories, hip and trendy celebrity impersonations, and hearty guffaws. Find out what nuts, tortoises, the Tucson desert, and bowls of blood have in common. Weens asks about regrets with our dad which spurs a story about dating Cowboy Denny. We question our tomboy qualities, learning about what mom fought for and what she let go of. And we finally reveal to her our secret ways of sneaking out of the house in high school, but are surprised by her response. There’s a fact check on coyote fatalities, we accidentally pitch a real-life horror movie idea about rattlesnakes in the ravine, and we close it out with a three-part harmony to our lord. You heard it here first!

Plucking, Online Dating, Dirty John and Feet

E87 – This is a fun one from under a blanket in LA! As we’re staring at kneecaps, we talk about shaving, tweezing and how it brings pleasure. Why? To find out, we fact-check plucking and trichotillomania and find out some interesting biology behind it. Then we recap a recent camping trip and have some amazing, simple advice for parents. Naturally, this leads us to talk about the Reels conspiracy theory and online dating. Weens is poking her hairless toe into the man pool and we talk all about Hinge and the fine folks popping up on the app. Then Julianne tells the story of her friend’s involvement with Dirty John. Holy crumb, no wonder she’s hesitant! Finally we get into feet, loafers, and Joelle’s ex-boyfriends who belong in them. It’s a funny episode that lets you peek inside the world of a couple of grown-up but not-so-grown-up sisters.
