She Writes the Songs, Grape MTV, Mad About Pets

E115 – Feisty! What starts as a fun conversation about work and stay-at-home-mom life, turns a corner in this episode! First we play a guessing game while listening to one of Julianne’s rad original songs “Cave Girl” This inspires personality test chatter and we wonder: are you a storyteller or an archiver? Mouse gets called out on a personal chef on vacation and explains why she feels like an imposter during talk of thrift stores. We go deep on grape Flintstones, Red Vines, 80’s hair, and Guess the Year of these MTV videos. But when the topic of mean girl sisterhood comes up, things get bristly. Parents Just Don’t Understand! What’s up with pet fish, iguanas, sugar gliders, anoles, and buffed hamsters?! Julianne is an animal lover with a pet store background and makes her case about caged pets vs domesticated rescued animals. Joelle argues for animals in education and for personal connection. Who wins this debate? Then the real question… what’s a weenus?! And we wonder if Juls has macropsia, which we mistakenly call macronesia in the episode, feeling dizzy from disproportionate objects. We end on Mouse’s sweet middle son. Is the sassy teen overcompensating for the fact that he’s actually a tender-hearted guy?

Summer Camp, Psychic Dreams, Ethnomusicology, and Jaja Ding Dongs

E114 – While catching up, we talk psychic abilities and manifesting your thoughts into reality. Do you believe in karma? Then we jump into what’s on mama Mouse’s mind: summer camps and plans for her 3 kids now that California is opening up. After reminiscing about our camp memories, including wheelchairs and Wildman, we talk about the safety of summer camps, especially sleepaway camps, when it comes to COVID and predators. Of course this gets us talking about kidnappings and murders here in San Diego and we mention a bit about Chelsea King, John Gardner, Danielle Van Dam, and David Westerfield. Joelle tells her personal story of the Miramar Lake Jogger, which is super disturbing. Then Weens exerts her telekinetic powers onto her microphone, which gets us back onto pyschic abilities. She even teaches us how to control dreams! Hear the crazy experiment that Weens conducted on this, proving her powers. Speaking of control, or lack thereof, we have received some unsolicited dick pics. But the only kinds of ding dongs we’re interested in are of the jaja variety – hear Julianne’s story on this! We jump into her ethnomusicology class and learn about microtones, syncopation, and what her jazz musician friends have to say about Western music. We also want to ask you – our listener – about what puts you in the zone? Julianne teases future interviews on this subject with saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Matt Politano, and drummer Steve Ferrone, who, along with bassist Matt Cory, are known as The Coffee Shop Trio. They have gigs every Sunday that we will advertise on our social media, so please be sure to follow us @mouseandweens on all the platforms!

Steve Ferrone, Drummer of Tom Petty, Duran Duran, Clapton & More

E101 – We had the honor of interviewing esteemed jazz, rock, and R&B drummer Steve Ferrone. You have definitely heard his work – just look at this bio below. In this recording, he gets candid about love, family, dalliances, the rock and roll lifestyle, and explains some life changes he has made for the better. We learn about the mods and rockers of Brighton Beach in the 60’s and how Steve’s first blues band opened for The Who. Steve and Julianne talk shop regarding syncopation and style – Pretty Purdie, Steve Gadd, and Led Zeppelin to name a few. When asked about nerves, traveling, and groupies, we heard some funny, surprising stories! Duran Duran played a big role during Stephen’s busiest year, when he also played with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and was in the Saturday Night Live band. We figured out the connection between Questlove and Average White Band. And Julianne’s Unchained questions inspire a great Johnny Cash impression! Find out which soap opera Steve was in, which musicians and moments rendered him star-struck, including recalling what it was like to record at Abbey Road. We also hear the amazing story of Prince performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote in some questions, so we find out about a reunion, conflict, grief, what life was really like in the band, and insight into the person that Tom Petty was.

Steve has played with Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Morrissey-Mullen, Bee Gees, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, Tracey Chapman, Mick Jagger, George Benson, Peter Frampton, Anita Baker, Bryan Ferry, Rick James, Slash, Scritti Politti, Pooh and more.

LA Werk It Weekend, Stump Dan, Stunts and Special FX

E61 – Come play! We break down our weekend in downtown LA at the historic Ace Hotel’s Werk It women’s podcasting conference. Hear our lecture takeaways and highlights scootering in skirts, meeting famous podcaster Georgia Hardstark of My Favorite Murder, and hanging with Dessa, well-known rapper, author, and TED Talk lecturer at the closing party. She went deep with us into the neuroscience behind love and we talk a little bit about both of our relationship obsessions. Then we come back to Julianne’s cottage and have a jam session with Dan Mahony, playing the game Stump Dan the Guitar Man. He is so good! See if he gets stumped by Lizzo, Afroman, Coldplay, or Queens of the Stone Age, and watch the rest of the performance on our Facebook Live video in our FB Group. We take a turn into the behind the scenes of tv and film as Weens talks about her dream of working in stunts. What is her connection with the Sega Fighting Vipers commercial and main character design? Should she take a stunt driving course? What did she do in The Rookie’s Season 2 trailer? Hear her interview with Special Effects coordinator Bob Calvert and one of his craziest memories working with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny on The X-Files. And find out where on the risk-taking scale Mouse is these days.

Mean Girls

E55 – We have encountered undermining women lately and try to get to the bottom of it. Mouse and Weens dig into some evolutionary biology – caveman theories – and we look at young girl groups to understand early mean girl behavior. Why are some women hurtful to each other in the workplace? How do you deal with anger, jealousy, resentment, and sabotage? What can women do to remedy the situation? Hear about both Joelle’s and Julianne’s current mean girl situations, after we play catch up talking kids, cord and screen drama, a Hulk Hogan archery master, whether our dad was the Golden State Killer, and reminiscing about a cute crush boy. Then take a 60’s music trivia quiz with us! The big picture here is to learn about female dynamics and how to improve future situations and relationships with other women.

Hear about The Virgin Sacrifice show at Westside Comedy Theater hosted by Nicole Blaine with comedians Lachlan Patterson, Barry Rothbart, Laurie Kilmartin, and Bryan Callen. And we talk to The Virgin himself, friend and cameraman Chris Taylor, to hear what it was like to go up for the first time. Weens is open to trying standup herself and other vulnerable experiences, like getting back into acting, doing more creative collaborative projects, and even speed dating! Life is to be lived without fear and to connect in true relationships with others, so with that in mind, enjoy Mouse’s most awkward matchmaking moment ever, and our little Mother’s Day ditty to our sweet mom.
