Muppets, Gilman, Green Day, East Bay Punk, Tattoos

E95 – After a little quarantine talk, we do some happiness exercises and get right into some fun filmmaking memories. Julianne worked on “The Muppet Movie” and recalls a day shooting with Chris Cooper, stunt explosions and injuries, and what Brian Henson had to say about his dad Jim Henson. Another sweet man we discuss is Chris Martin from Coldplay. Is Joelle horny or just nostalgic for live music and happier times? We’ll go with the latter as we segue into nostalgia talk about 924 Gilman St., the co-op music club from our Bay Area youth. Julianne reconnected with friends from these days, and we both watched the documentary “Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk” to see her friend Sean’s role. She talks about his connection to Green Day, and adds a hilarious story about Lint (aka Tim Armstrong) and Lars, the guys from Operation Ivy and Rancid. Why was Julianne fascinated by these types of people? She connected with guys who were interesting and wild, a lot like her friend Puck from “The Real World San Francisco”. We hear a funny story about him and our dad in the San Ramon Christmas tree farm, and then remember a story about the East Area Rapist (Golden State Killer) in that same farm, and a Richard Ramirez (Night Stalker) serial killer rental-house connection. We get back into talking about the psychology and angst behind punk music, and the judgements that go along with the music, the hair, and even the tattoos. It quickly turns into a parenting discussion about tattooing, morals, and shame. We battle out who was the worst teen and when a parent needs to draw the line vs when to compromise with your kids when they go down this path. Where do YOU fall on the punk to square scale?!

When is Horror Okay for Kids?

E94 – Parenting does not come with a handbook. So when is it okay to let your kids watch horror movies? Joelle has two teenage sneaky boys interested in gruesome and gory, and one little girl fascinated by the occult. But being a mom who hates scary things herself, she questions whether she has been too overprotective with her restrictions. Cool aunt and introspective sister Julianne weighs in with her perspective, as she recollects being a kid seeking out thrillers. How were we raised and how did we turn out? Why do people like to be scared? Is it just a rush or does it mess with the brain? We consult some authors on the subject and even bring on an expert in the field to provide his two cents, horror filmmaker Don Adams. He schools us in Horror 101 and gives us a list of classic scary movies to start with. Let’s dissect this issue and see where we land. Will this be the year that horror makes its way into Mouse’s house?

Fix My Life Sis!

E91 – What Would Weens Do? Parenting advice and more! Julianne has been staying with Joelle during quarantine and after a few weeks, has a new perspective on how her family operates. Knowing this, Mouse asks for advice to overhaul how the house runs and how she’s raising the kids. Julianne becomes a pseudo life coach and gives Joelle tips in 5 categories: food, kids and parenting, self, household, and relationships. As uncomfortable as it is for the little sister to tell the big sister what to do, the takeaways are very positive. This episode has so many great nuggets of wisdom that anyone listening will learn a thing or two they can implement to improve their life!

Haiku Wieners

E89 – Our boot scootin cat starts us off with an exclamation mark as we get talking about Weens’ re-entry into the social media world. We find out if she is in fact The Rock’s number one super mega fan on Instagram and what the heck is the name of the guy who wrote Hamilton. Then we get to the meat of the episode and read everyone’s fun Haiku contest submissions, commenting on their back stories and finding out their entertainment industry connections. Put cotton in your ears and get the broom ready because we’re doing some shout-outs and name-dropping! You’ll learn all sorts of stories about us along the way including Mouse’s Australian love connection, Julianne’s Exorcist sleepwalking moves, and Joelle’s thoughts on armpits. This is collegiate stuff, so get out your binder paper and take notes!

Love Life and Dating Q&A

E88 – Still stuck on the topic of online dating, Joelle talks Julianne into doing a funny Q & A to find out all about our love lives. First we catch up on 80’s tv, get advice from Alan Alda, and lament the air quality from the Northern California wildfires (stay safe Sunni, Brandi and Cori). Then we jump into online dating with optimistic Mouse and pessimistic Weens, and dissect what types of guys Weens likes. There’s a rather frightening interruption that throws us for a loop, so we pause and come back the next day. You’ll hear about married men, divorced men, and deal breakers when it comes to humor, taste in music, politics, and footwear. We even play a little fantasy threesome, FMK or Whoopee-Marry- Kill, and learn way too much about Tom Hardy and Don Johnson!

Plucking, Online Dating, Dirty John and Feet

E87 – This is a fun one from under a blanket in LA! As we’re staring at kneecaps, we talk about shaving, tweezing and how it brings pleasure. Why? To find out, we fact-check plucking and trichotillomania and find out some interesting biology behind it. Then we recap a recent camping trip and have some amazing, simple advice for parents. Naturally, this leads us to talk about the Reels conspiracy theory and online dating. Weens is poking her hairless toe into the man pool and we talk all about Hinge and the fine folks popping up on the app. Then Julianne tells the story of her friend’s involvement with Dirty John. Holy crumb, no wonder she’s hesitant! Finally we get into feet, loafers, and Joelle’s ex-boyfriends who belong in them. It’s a funny episode that lets you peek inside the world of a couple of grown-up but not-so-grown-up sisters.

Police On Police

E84 – We are proud to have Ahmed Hassan back co-hosting with us, and to be a platform for these important voices. We put together a panel of California cops – a black female police officer, a white female police officer, and a black male police officer – to discuss what they’ve seen and what they know from their experiences in law enforcement. You’ll hear why they chose this career and their thoughts on brutality, protests, and defunding the police. You’ll learn their insights into quotas, racial profiling, sundowning laws, the code of silence, and what is really happening in the station and on the streets in their profession. How do the ‘bad apples’ make it onto the force and is this issue as prevalent as we’re seeing in the media? This is an eye-opening discussion spanning many years and many perspectives. We came out of it with a new viewpoint and wonder if you might too.

Should I Homeschool?

E83 – During this quarantine shutdown time, many parents are faced with educational decisions for their kids including whether or not to homeschool. This is a conversation with Joelle’s childhood friend Ali, a former teacher and homeschooler of five kids here in California since 2004. She has a great perspective on the benefits and what it takes to homeschool, and talks Mouse through the whole process from her point of view. We cover why she chose to homeschool, whether to go with independent, private, or charter school education, her thoughts on ages and behaviors that are a good fit for homeschooling, which curriculum to choose, whether to use old school papers and books versus digital tools and computers, what is HSLDA and why it’s crucial, being under an umbrella school, filing a homeschool affidavit, hiring a teacher to oversee your paperwork and keep you accountable and on track, what a homeschool calendar and schedule looks like with grades, test-taking, field trips, outdoor learning, vacations, and structure, socialization and when it’s time for the kids to join outside classes, co-ops, or go back to public school, how to do science labs, language classes, SATs, taking junior college classes for credits, being on a 4-year college track, and what universities really think of homeschoolers.

Going Crazy, Near Death, Comedy & Celebrities

E82 – Anyone else going nuts? Julianne talks about the film industry shutdown and then Joelle tells a wild, near death story that happened to her and the kids, all started by being stuck at home and going sort of crazy. Ok, maybe that’s being dramatic. But Weens gets into real Near Death Experiences and talks of speaker and author Nancy Rynes who died twice and came back to talk about it. NDE’s are fascinating and people can learn great lessons from them. Hey, what’s keeping us busy? Summer camp, distant get togethers, planning a documentary!, and lots of comedy, including talk of actress and comic Martha Kelly from Baskets and an awkward family Don’t Mess With the Zohan moment! Parenting is stressful, but Mouse is trying to teach kids important lessons like black lives matter, especially in a city that is dealing with racism. What can you do as a parent to help when everyone is locked down and you feel helpless about activism? Get people to vote with PostcardsToVoters.org! We do lots of name-dropping throughout this episode especially in our ‘Celebrity Stories That Go Nowhere’ segment, so listen for Adam Sandler, Carol Channing, Woody Allen, George Wendt, Will Ferrell, Kid Rock, Gabriel Byrne, Michael Landon, Nellie Oleson, Alison Arngrim, Joe and Kevin Jonas, Anita Moorjani, Ethel Merman, Katherine Hepburn, and Zach Galifinakis mentions. We just can’t help ourselves!

Teachers Back to School

E81 – After catching up with how our summer quarantine single-lives vs mom-lives are going, we jump into an insightful conversation with Jennifer Campbell Martin, a 20-year middle school teacher in Long Beach, California. We get an educator’s point of view of what going back to school might look like, and are interested to hear about what the plans might be. Virtual learning vs on-campus? Will kids wear masks? How will schools do class time and rotations? Where will they eat lunch? Are teachers as anxious as parents? There are so many factors to consider, so we break it all down bit by bit. This is a fun, lighthearted but poignant conversation that will get all the gears moving as we get closer to back-to-school. What to do?!
