E116 – Hope your brain sponge is ready to soak up some fascinating knowledge! Matty, easily the smartest Nooks and Crannies podcaster besides co-host Evan, serves us up a verbal pu pu platter of stories and information as to why humans do the things and think the way we do. He has thoughts on ancient alien theory, having under his belt 17 years of college, multiple degrees in many social sciences, a touch of ESP, and two personal UFO sightings! Yes, he gives details on his spacecraft viewings, down to the unfortunate interruption. He explains his beliefs about horoscopes, Newtonian physics, and ancient people’s understanding of the cosmos. We ask about indigenous cultures in Canada and the US, talk history books and racial classification, and learn about puberty rituals and practices. We find out feelings on hemp, ayahuasca, and iboga as we chat about psychedelics and cultures. There is lots of laughter as we hear about primate sexuality amongst nonbinary, self-loving, sword-fighting bonobos. And we learn why there were a bunch of sad non-orgasmic naked people sitting on crystal boxes in the 50’s! Hear the conversation on why people, anthropologically speaking, fantasize about partners or have obsessive sexual behaviors. This leads to neurotransmitter and neurology talk, and we find out about Matty’s many concussions and CTE, and talk disability policies and thoughts on healthcare. We go deep on grape Flintstones, Red Vines, 80’s hair, and Guess the Year of these MTV videos. But when the topic of mean girl sisterhood comes up, things get bristly. Parents Just Don’t Understand! What’s up with pet fish, iguanas, sugar gliders, anoles, and buffed hamsters?! Julianne is an animal lover with a pet store background and makes her case about caged pets vs domesticated rescued animals. Joelle argues for animals in education and for personal connection. Who wins this debate? Then the real question… what’s a weenus?! And we wonder if Juls has macropsia, which we mistakenly call macronesia in the episode, feeling dizzy from disproportionate objects. We end on Mouse’s sweet middle son. Is the sassy teen overcompensating for the fact that he’s actually a tender-hearted guy?

E114 – While catching up, we talk psychic abilities and manifesting your thoughts into reality. Do you believe in karma? Then we jump into what’s on mama Mouse’s mind: summer camps and plans for her 3 kids now that California is opening up. After reminiscing about our camp memories, including wheelchairs and Wildman, we talk about the safety of summer camps, especially sleepaway camps, when it comes to COVID and predators. Of course this gets us talking about kidnappings and murders here in San Diego and we mention a bit about Chelsea King, John Gardner, Danielle Van Dam, and David Westerfield. Joelle tells her personal story of the Miramar Lake Jogger, which is super disturbing. Then Weens exerts her telekinetic powers onto her microphone, which gets us back onto pyschic abilities. She even teaches us how to control dreams! Hear the crazy experiment that Weens conducted on this, proving her powers. Speaking of control, or lack thereof, we have received some unsolicited dick pics. But the only kinds of ding dongs we’re interested in are of the jaja variety – hear Julianne’s story on this! We jump into her ethnomusicology class and learn about microtones, syncopation, and what her jazz musician friends have to say about Western music. E112 – He wasn’t supposed to live past 1985, yet here we are sitting down with Reverend Steve Pieters! Hear the incredible life story of this inspiring pastor and long-term survivor of AIDS. His interview with televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in 1985 turned the Christian and LGBTQ communities both upside down, a storyline featured in the upcoming film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield, coming out September 2021. Steve discusses his background growing up gay in the 1950’s, his journey into religious studies and leadership, the reality of his sickness in the early 80’s, and his miraculous story of recovery. He explains his near death experience in detail, and tells how this new knowledge influenced how he helped others with AIDS. Hear about his relationship to Albert Einstein, his discovery and career with the Metropolitan Community Church, and his current love with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. He even sings an original show tune “Medical Anomaly!” We hope you enjoy this amazing tale of recovery and hope.

  • APPEARANCES: His appearances include as a speaker at the first annual AIDS benefit dinner with Elizabeth Taylor and First Lady Betty Ford, as a presenter of Buddy of the Year Award to Whoopi Goldberg at the third APLA benefit, and as a guest at the first AIDS Prayer Breakfast at the White House, with his conversation referenced by President Bill Clinton in the World AIDS Day speech on December 1, 1993. You will currently find Steve singing with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and giving sermons at MCC.
  • AWARDS: Rev. Pieters has received many many awards for his ministry in the AIDS crisis from many churches and religious groups. He received an Honorary Doctor of Ministry Degree from Samaritan College the seminary of the MCC, the prestigious Sheldon Andelson Award from the Stonewall Democratic Club, and the Sandra L. Robinson Award from Community Unity in Dayton, Ohio.
