Summer Camp, Psychic Dreams, Ethnomusicology, and Jaja Ding Dongs

E114 – While catching up, we talk psychic abilities and manifesting your thoughts into reality. Do you believe in karma? Then we jump into what’s on mama Mouse’s mind: summer camps and plans for her 3 kids now that California is opening up. After reminiscing about our camp memories, including wheelchairs and Wildman, we talk about the safety of summer camps, especially sleepaway camps, when it comes to COVID and predators. Of course this gets us talking about kidnappings and murders here in San Diego and we mention a bit about Chelsea King, John Gardner, Danielle Van Dam, and David Westerfield. Joelle tells her personal story of the Miramar Lake Jogger, which is super disturbing. Then Weens exerts her telekinetic powers onto her microphone, which gets us back onto pyschic abilities. She even teaches us how to control dreams! Hear the crazy experiment that Weens conducted on this, proving her powers. Speaking of control, or lack thereof, we have received some unsolicited dick pics. But the only kinds of ding dongs we’re interested in are of the jaja variety – hear Julianne’s story on this! We jump into her ethnomusicology class and learn about microtones, syncopation, and what her jazz musician friends have to say about Western music. We also want to ask you – our listener – about what puts you in the zone? Julianne teases future interviews on this subject with saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Matt Politano, and drummer Steve Ferrone, who, along with bassist Matt Cory, are known as The Coffee Shop Trio. They have gigs every Sunday that we will advertise on our social media, so please be sure to follow us @mouseandweens on all the platforms!

Steve Ferrone, Drummer of Tom Petty, Duran Duran, Clapton & More

E101 – We had the honor of interviewing esteemed jazz, rock, and R&B drummer Steve Ferrone. You have definitely heard his work – just look at this bio below. In this recording, he gets candid about love, family, dalliances, the rock and roll lifestyle, and explains some life changes he has made for the better. We learn about the mods and rockers of Brighton Beach in the 60’s and how Steve’s first blues band opened for The Who. Steve and Julianne talk shop regarding syncopation and style – Pretty Purdie, Steve Gadd, and Led Zeppelin to name a few. When asked about nerves, traveling, and groupies, we heard some funny, surprising stories! Duran Duran played a big role during Stephen’s busiest year, when he also played with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and was in the Saturday Night Live band. We figured out the connection between Questlove and Average White Band. And Julianne’s Unchained questions inspire a great Johnny Cash impression! Find out which soap opera Steve was in, which musicians and moments rendered him star-struck, including recalling what it was like to record at Abbey Road. We also hear the amazing story of Prince performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote in some questions, so we find out about a reunion, conflict, grief, what life was really like in the band, and insight into the person that Tom Petty was.

Steve has played with Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Morrissey-Mullen, Bee Gees, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, Tracey Chapman, Mick Jagger, George Benson, Peter Frampton, Anita Baker, Bryan Ferry, Rick James, Slash, Scritti Politti, Pooh and more.

Ski-Doos and Ski-Don’ts

E65 – It’s Christmas Eve and it’s our two-year anniversary, so we go back to where it all began in our mom’s basement in Idaho! She even pops in for a bit – a throwback to episode 1 – and we recount childhood holiday stories, getting nostalgic about the elf on the shelf and dad dressed as santa. So much fun but so many lies! We catch up and compare our LA and San Diego parties. And we tell our latest crazy family story about going snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, where we crashed and got stuck in the snow for hours. Did we survive? Or did we freeze to death, only to thaw out and be discovered in the Springtime like so many other victims? You’ll have to listen to find out!
